About
Hey! Thanks for landing on my blog and being nosey enough to check out the "about" section! I guess that means you want to know a bit more about me, huh?
Well, I'm a software developer currently residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and I hate writing bios, but it's something that just needs to be done these days. I'm also a University of Alberta graduate with over seven years of experience in my field. If you count working every summer in a software lab while going to school and a sixteen month internship, I'm nearing a decade.
Wow. I remember being pretty intimidated by folks who'd been developing software for that long (and feeling so young in comparison!). So it's sort of strange to be there now. No grey hairs just yet, but enough experience to have gut feelings about how long a particular feature is going to take and to see the commonalities in "new" technologies and languages. I also seem to have avoided the grumpy elitism bug that seems to often come with experience in this field. I like to teach others, and I'm constantly learning, so I'm always in touch with how it feels to be a novice at something. And when you're always a novice, it's pretty hard to feel all that elite about anything.
I'm also a musician, writer, and karateka (karate student) who digs zen, philosophy, and psychology. Believe it or not, I've applied all of these to computer programming at some time or another, and vice versa. I believe that some of the best ideas come from combining things that at first don't seem to fit.
If you're a fellow software developer of like mind, connect with me on Twitter or send me an email with some links to your stuff. If you're Random Company X, who needs some short or long term quality software development at a fair price in Ruby, Ruby on Rails, PHP, Javascript, Cocoa/Objective-C, Java, or some other awesome language you'd like me to learn, please also feel free to send me an email.
